The first tree we planted was an oak tree. It wasn’t by choice but it was the right tree to plant at Ta’Kenuna tower.
The tree was well looked after by Maurice Stirling over the last 12 months. New growth showing.
The oak tree is a slow growing tree. Life expectancy is over 100-200 years. So this tree will still be around well into the 22nd century and beyond.
Looking forward d to season 2 starting this week.

Argotti Botanic Gardens and Resource Centre visit
Yesterday, Siġar volunteers and supporters enjoyed an informative and enjoyable garden visit and guided 90-minute tour, expertly led by the garden's new curator, Christian Borg. Thank you for an amazing time!
Founded in the 18th century, Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana, Malta, is the Commonwealth’s third-oldest botanical garden. Today, it maintains the national herbarium and a diverse botanical collection that includes a Mediterranean section.
The gardens also play a role in education and research through collaborations with several University of Malta departments, including Biology, Conservation and Built Heritage, Architecture and Urban Design, and the Institute of Earth Systems.
Research projects have focused on plant conservation, ecology, and bioactive plant extracts, while the site continues to serve as an open classroom for primary and secondary school students or for anyone interested in learning more about the rich and diverse range of plant species found on the Maltese Islands.
Following the tour, the group then walked on to Friends of the Earth Malta to learn about the Community Garden project and their Green Resource Centre.

Watering and checking on 7 oleanders adopted by our volunteers at Kunsill Lokali Iż-Żebbuġ playground.
These young trees weren’t watered as irrigation system is not functioning. We have asked LC to fix but still work in progress.
Glad to report that despite looking beyond saving, the trees are sprouting young leaves.
Well done to all volunteers involved.

Tree Talk
We would like to thank the #rotaryclubofgozo for inviting us to give a talk to their membership about Siġar's work to date and also our future tree planting plans here on #Gozo.
At yesterday evening's talk, we shared details of the many benefits of planting trees, as our e-NGO prepares to resume planting activities at community and school-based projects over the autumn and winter months.
Siġar is driven by a mission to enrich Gozo’s natural beauty. We aim to foster sustainable growth by planting trees in schools and local councils, creating thriving green spaces for future generations
We welcome the opportunity to give free talks to community groups about Siġar, provide further details of our current projects, 'Tree Champion' volunteering roles, and sponsorship opportunities to support the future work and plans of our not-for-profit, Gozo-based e-NGO, which was set up in August 2024 (VO/2158).
For a review of the sponsored projects and successful community partnerships in the first planting season, please visit our website sigargozo.org/ or on this Facebook page.
Highlights of our recent activities can also be found using this link in the Times of Malta (3-minute read) x2.timesofmalta.com/20250602/sunday-circle/growing-new-trees-on-gozo-a-successful-first-season/

More highlights of visit to Tad Dawwara nursery in Victoria.
Among them, a Roman megalith, meeting the team.
Among many plants grown out of local seeds, we were shown i the only endemic gozitan plant (meaning only found in Gozo) : the Maltese everlasting (last picture).
Good time spend in this fantastic place : the source of all trees planted by Siġar thanks to our collaboration with Ministry for Gozo and Planning.
Thank you @joseph bonello for organising it.
