Dedicated to greening
Gozo by:
planting the right tree,
in the right place,
the right way

Siġar (which means ‘trees’ in Maltese) is committed to planting young trees on school grounds and local council lands with plants nurtured from local seeds from the Gozo Plant Nursery and Experimental Farm.

Community Collaborations

Tree Planting Project at Nadur Primary School – January 2025

Collaborating with Communities for a Greener Gozo

With less than 2% forest cover in Malta, Siġar is committed to enriching Gozo’s landscapes through sustainable tree planting. Our projects will complement other larger afforestation initiatives by focusing on urban areas.

By planting the right tree, in place, in the right way, Siġar will seed and share best practices with its volunteers and members of the public

The first tree we planted was an oak tree. It wasn’t by choice but it was the right tree to plant at Ta’Kenuna tower.

The tree was well looked after by Maurice Stirling over the last 12 months. New growth showing.

The oak tree is a slow growing tree. Life expectancy is over 100-200 years. So this tree will still be around well into the 22nd century and beyond.

Looking forward d to season 2 starting this week.

Argotti Botanic Gardens and Resource Centre visit
Yesterday, Siġar volunteers and supporters enjoyed an informative and enjoyable garden visit and guided 90-minute tour, expertly led by the gardens new curator, Christian Borg. Thank you for an amazing time!

Founded in the 18th century, Argotti Botanic Gardens in Floriana, Malta, is the Commonwealth’s third-oldest botanical garden. Today, it maintains the national herbarium and a diverse botanical collection that includes a Mediterranean section.

The gardens also play a role in education and research through collaborations with several University of Malta departments, including Biology, Conservation and Built Heritage, Architecture and Urban Design, and the Institute of Earth Systems.

Research projects have focused on plant conservation, ecology, and bioactive plant extracts, while the site continues to serve as an open classroom for primary and secondary school students or for anyone interested in learning more about the rich and diverse range of plant species found on the Maltese Islands.

Following the tour, the group then walked on to Friends of the Earth Malta to learn about the Community Garden project and their Green Resource Centre.
